Some residents from the St. Catharines community recently kicked off a program to help shelter the homeless. Out of the Heat Niagara aims to provide shelter to those looking for a cool place to sleep during the summer months. Founder Heather Morrison worked in social services, and was given the task to find shelter for the homeless. Despite her effort, there was simply nowhere to send those in need. After partnering with her best friend and fellow coworkers, Out of the Heat was created as a pilot project. Funded entirely by fundraising and donations, the program is run out of the Grace Anglican Church on Geneva Street. Social media and posters around the community helped to spread awareness. July 4th marked the first day of operations, and the program will run during the summer from 8 p.m to 8 a.m 6 days a week Wednesday through Monday. If you would like to get involved and/or make a donation, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or find them on Facebook.
